Sitting in the opening session of the Parents’ Seminar today I was surrounded by a roomful of parents who, for the most part, had never met one another before. Before the seminar began, their only commonality was having a child enrolled at Discovery Academy.
In the hours since then they have handed one another tissues for silent tears, nodded silent agreement to questions and confessions, laughed in relief to know that they are not the only parent who felt…. or said….or wished they hadn’t ….
“Wait until tomorrow,” says one of my co-workers as he gathers up empty coffee cups. “Wait until they’ve all experienced tonight’s play or been out on the ropes course together. That’s when they really get close.”
Today they each introduced themselves and told a little about their child. As one mother noted when she stood, “I could take a sentence from each one of you and that would describe my child and our experience.”
We are not strangers any more.
