"We have had some success with our home therapist using a DBT approach, however, we saw a lot of progress once she enrolled at Discovery Academy and joined your groups!"
How can DBT help your daughter?
Prospective students often are emotionally sensitive, having emotional experiences they don’t know how to handle, or acting out because they don’t know how to express these emotions. These students often feel misunderstood, but lack the coping skills required to process or handle these feelings, spiraling out of control.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy at Discovery Academy
In DBT, a therapist will carefully listen to a student, observing behavior to pinpoint unspoken emotions. Validating the student’s feelings and acting in an accepting and genuine manner allows the student to feel understood, and lowers anxiety surrounding emotional expression.
DBT Skills Training
To help manage emotional incidents and feelings in the long-term, DBT teaches mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance. Implementing these core skills will restore a student’s sense of self-respect, as they realize they have the ability to work with others and control their environment, all while accepting and validating their emotional experience, and recognizing emotions for what they are.
