David Hillstead

David began his studies at Southern Utah University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in the Social Sciences. He then attended Brigham Young University where he completed an M.S. and Ph.D. in Marriage and Family therapy. During his graduate studies David’s clinical experience included work at the Utah State Psychiatric Hospital where he often worked on the adolescent unit. He also began his wilderness therapy experience at Aspen Achievement Academy where he was a primary field therapist.

David’s research and clinical interests include understanding parent/adolescent relationship dynamics, particularly from a emotionally focused perspective. He also has interest in understanding and treating Oppositional Defiance Disorder in adolescent males, with a specialty in tracing/tracking unresolved emotional experiences that lead to behavioral acting out episodes. In private practice, David has worked with individuals and families on integrating spirituality and mental health.

Born and raised in Wyoming, David grew up in a wilderness environment and is comfortable connecting and treating adolescents in this setting. David is married and has 4 sons. He enjoys family excursions, fishing, hiking, and golf.
