Is It For My Child?

You know you need help – but what kind and where? Many parents tell us that’s exactly how they felt while trying to make decisions about their troubled teen. Constant conflict, anger and frustration often make parents feel hopeless.

You may have seen symptoms such as anger, sadness, depression, or defiance in your teen. Perhaps your child is struggling with low self esteem or substance abuse. Some of our students’ most common diagnoses include ADD, ADHD, or learning disabilities.

We can help. Discovery Academy specializes in working with families whose children have been expelled from public or private teen boarding schools. We accept children who may struggle with behavioral or emotional problems.

We are an excellent option for teens transitioning from other types of treatment programs, such as wilderness therapy and or residential treatment.

What’s the best course of action for your family? Our on-line assessment is a good place to start. Please take 15 minutes to complete the assessment to help us better understand how we can help you determine whether Discovery Academy is appropriate for your child.

You may also wish to seek help from an educational consultant. Consultants specialize in matching children to therapeutic programs most appropriate to their needs. A legitimate consultant will have visited the program and will not receive any compensation or fee for referring students.

While not affiliated with any one school or program, these men and women can help you identify your child’s unique needs and how best to meet those needs. For more information on educational consultants, visit their national organization website at www.iecaonline.com, or an educational website at www.teenhelpconsultant.com

We urge parents to be especially cautious in evaluating any claims made by Internet advertising alone. Your best bet is to visit the program personally, speak to students and staff at the program, check with appropriate state licensing officials, and seek advice from a qualified, independent educational consultant.

What are my options?

There are many types of troubled youth programs available to you and your child. These include therapeutic boarding schools, residential treatment centers (RTC’s), college prep schools, emotional growth schools, wilderness therapy schools and programs, and many others.

Figuring out which program is the best fit for your troubled teen can be overwhelming, to say the least.

We encourage parents to do as much research as possible. The Internet can be an excellent resource, but as one educational consultant put it, “Everything looks good on the Internet.”

At Discovery Academy, our admission counselor has a great deal of experience screening and recognizing students who are appropriate for our program. If your child is not appropriate for our program, we will do our very best to help you find an alternative that best fits your specific needs.

After 20 years in the industry, we have developed many trusted friends who use best practices in their respective programs. We will be happy to put you in contact with these individuals.

You may also want to involve an independent educational consultant. These men and women specialize in helping parents find the best placement possible for troubled teen. They operate under a strict code of ethics to maintain independence from the schools and programs they recommend. You may want to visit the national organization of Independent Educational Consultants at www.iecaonline.com or this educational website, www.teenhelpconsultant.com, for more information on educational consultants.
